The second entry in Jaime Coker’s “Villains” series, the Cobra Commander is the supreme leader of the terrorist organization COBRA, and is the main adversary of the GI Joes.
The character was created by Marvel Comics writer Larry Hama, who envisioned the character as "being in love with the sound of his own voice." His voice would make its mark in the childhood of a generation, when the character was brought to television by voice actor Chris Latta (also known for playing the villain character “Starscream” in ‘Transformers’).
Cobra Commander was obsessed with controlling the world’s governments, people, resources and wealth, and employed a mix of chaos and destruction to force his will. He led forces that would start wars, take hostages and plot terrorism, and his plans were constabtly overcome by the heroic efforts of the Joes.
“One of my favorite villains and one of the funniest, I carried the motif of the villain destroying the hero toy over from Skeletor to have the Cobra Commander taking his frustrations out on a GI Joe. I had a bit of a hard time selecting which Joe to put in his hands but in the end it had to be Duke. He was the most recognizable hero and was most often toppling the Commander’s plans.”
“ I couldn’t fit the actual Cobra symbol into the drawing but I was able to incorporate the red of the emblem into a more menacing backlight. All I heard in my head while working on this print was, “Cobra will take over the world!” - Jaime Coker
